About
Hello! My name is Captain Ronald Short, but please call me Ron. I am a highly proficient, motivated, and dynamic licensed Master with notable expertise in vessel management. I possess both international and coastal experience with exposure to a variety of industry-related operations and vessel types, including passenger, supply, oceanographic, break bulk, and special purpose explosive carriers. I have an astute ability to maintain effective working relationships with all departments aboard the vessel and within the company, utilizing active listening and social perceptiveness to ensure common operational objectives are met.
I am a responsible, dependable individual with a high-energy, hands-on approach to management. I have excellent communication skills and a proven ability to assess, train, and motivate officers and crew. I am highly respected for my sound judgment and critical thinking during vessel operations. I am active in acquiring knowledge of new technology and industry trends. As a proactive, results-driven individual, I am committed to undertaking new and challenging roles.
After 42 years of experience in the Maritime Industry, I started as a deckhand on an Alaskan commercial fishing salmon power troller and longline halibut fishing vessel. I have worked on many different types of vessels in the maritime industry, including but not limited to small passenger, research, oil and gas support, break-bulk coastal freight, and special purpose explosive carriers.
My main focus during my maritime career has been the safety of the vessel, crew, and passengers I am responsible for. Risk assessment is a common, day-to-day mindset. I pride myself on providing a safe working environment for all involved on board. I held a limited tonnage 1600-ton Master of Oceans license (1600 tons domestic / 3000 tons international tonnage).
By offering my expert opinion to a case, you can take advantage of my 42 years of seagoing experience. As an expert witness, I can provide opinions on both plaintiff and defense cases. I ask myself what could or should have been done to reduce risk on board. What did the Captain and crew do right or wrong to either safely mitigate or exacerbate the issue on board? What corrective actions had taken place in prior accidents to reduce the possibility of a reoccurrence? Conducting a Root Cause Analysis to tell the true story of what happened and why it happened is key in providing a clear picture of the event.
